Today women around the world are marching, protesting, rallying and striking to draw attention to inequality. In many parts of the world, the struggle women face is still massive and this is a day when the world’s attention is on them: today is International Women’s Day.

According to the official website, today we “celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women”. While the plight of women shouldn’t be neglected, their many successes should certainly be celebrated.

I believe I have a unique view on this issue because of where I work. I’m the only male in a female-dominated department, within a company with a female management team run by a managing director – also a woman. We are one of 1.1 million SME companies in the UK that are female-led, making up 20% of all SME businesses according to government statistics.

In the microcosm of Creative Bridge, women rule. The dynamic is like no other company I’ve ever worked at, which is probably why this is the longest job I’ve held. There’s something about the culture here that’s encouraging and pleasant, where successes are celebrated and people are valued. That might sound like a given, all workplaces should be like this, but how many are? In the 27 years that I’ve been in the workforce, this is one of a few times I’ve encountered such a pleasant dynamic.

I can’t pinpoint precisely what it is that makes the work environment here so pleasing. Perhaps it’s the way everyone is encouraged to be themselves, the non-corporate structure or the family-like atmosphere in the building.

And I suspect others feel the same as we’ve had several employees who’ve been with the company for over 10 years (both male and female). In an industry where there’s a lot of competition and movement, such a high employee retention rate is unusual. Maybe there’s something in our water, or maybe it’s what happens when you have like-minded women in charge. Whatever it is, it’s working.
